Do you know a child with special needs who might like to try yoga?
Yoga for the Special Child is a safe and effective style of yoga, designed specifically to enhance the natural development of children and adults with special needs.
Using a comprehensive program of yoga techniques, this method is beneficial for babies, children and adults with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and other developmental challenges. It also provides an effective therapy for children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, ADHD and learning disabilities.
History of Yoga for the Special Child
The method was founded over 45 years ago by Sonia Sumar, whose second daughter Roberta was born with Down Syndrome in 1972. Sonia began doing yoga with Roberta from infancy and the results astounded doctors. Roberta grew up to be an expert yogi and lived in happiness and confidence. Word spread and many other parents asked Sonia to work with their children in her native Brazil and later in the US. Now Sonia travels all over the world training and teaching the Yoga for the Special Child method. I have been blessed to train with her since 2017.
Yoga can help each one of us reach our highest potential; physically, mentally and spiritually. With regular, heart-felt practice anyone will see an improvement in their health and happiness.
The benefits of Hatha yoga for children and adults include:
- Increasing flexibility and strength
- Stimulating the body’s internal systems
- Balancing the nervous systems
I have been training and working at the inspirational MahaDevi Roberta Sumar Yoga Centre in Islington since 2017. The Centre was founded by Denisa Nenova, who has been training with Sonia for over 10 years and it is the only dedicated centre for Yoga for the Special Child in the UK.
